Rules and Principles
We talked in class about rules and principles and about how if people keep following rules without knowing the principles behind those rules, they will never learn. An example is when in high school we are expected to be in class everyday because it is a rule and when kids get to college, it is up to them to decide to go to class everyday. Some don't go because in high school, they were forced to do so. I recently watched a video about the Kid who slapped his mom on Dr. Phil Show . I just wandering did the kid not understand the rule of obedient or the principle or both?

I watched the video and I think that the child understood the principle but his conceptualization (action) did not match what the principle intended. He wants his mother to be kind to him and in return he will be kind and obedient. But his mother is not being a good role model for kind behavior if she is hitting him and yelling at him.
ReplyDeleteI've always believed that high school should take a larger step to be like college. If we were given the individual freedom more to an extent like we do in college, then people would learn the value of going to class to learn and work hard. Rather than being forced to go to class because it's the law or because your parents force you too. More of the youth will truly want to go to class
ReplyDeleteI'm all for it. High school is plenty old enough to learn autonomy, and college is very late to start.
DeleteI watched the video and I am not sure if the mother is lying or the son. The mom has no recollection of the stories her son is telling her and says he cries wolf. Either way, I think the child does not understand the principle of respect. Therefore, he does not follow the rule that you should respect your parents. However, the parents are to blame because they should of taught him the principle of respect and enforced the rule if needed. It would be acceptable if the child hit his mother because she was abusive and he was defending himself. It is not acceptable for him to hit his mother for trying to speak. He should understand that there is hierarchy in the family and his mom is superior to him. Therefore, if she hits him when he misbehaves before adulthood, it is acceptable. On a side note, it is interesting that his mother did not hit him back. Rather she has good self control on camera or she honestly doesn't want to hit her son.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone really have any business hitting anyone else?
